I just got done putting a 390 in my 72 F100, C6 auto. Now I'm having problems with it dying on me when I put it in gear, not all the time but sometimes. I drove it across town and it drove fine, no probs but then I went to leave and it died when I put it into reverse. I tried it again and it went into gear and then as soon as I turned on the lights it died. I tried it a few more times and as soon as the lights got turned on it died.
The truck has a Carter AFB carb, Edelbrock manifold, Mallory unilite distributor, Mallory coil, ballast resistor, Mallory noise box thing, Hooker headers, and Flowmaster exhaust. I have the unilite wired from the stock ignition resistance wire to the ballast then to the positive on the coil, could this be the cause? It has all new batt cables, starter and starter cable, and I have the ground hooked up from the firewall to the cylinder head. The truck starts instantly and runs in park and neutral fine with the lights on.
You can not run Both a ris wise and a ballest pack, This will lower the voltage way to low. as to the cause, I would fix this known problen first, then see how it goes, what are the rpm at idle?
I really couldn't tell you the rpm, I haven't installed the tach in the truck yet. I just got it going yesterday. I was going to find a switched 12v wire and run it too the Ballast instead of the resistor wire.
