'Idiot light/gauges'

I'm putting aftermarket oil pressure/water temp gauges in and was wondering if I can pick up the blank idiot gauges to fill in the factory gauges since I am using after market ones. and if it would be possible to put another type of display on the blank gauge?

Drill and stick a small Painless led indicator through it and then label it or paint it so it would be readable from the bulbs I already have there?

You cannot swap gauge clusters with idiot light clusters. The wiring for the charging is a little different.

Ok thanks, how about for the automatic gear selector - a manual trans truck would've come with a blank? Can that be swapped in place since I'm going to a manual?

I am not sure on these trucks, but on other cars I have messed with, you just take the PRND21 piece out.

You certainly can un-bolt the prnd21 piece from the instruments and replace it with a blank piece. I've done this several times on my truck, as i 've swapped various clusters in/out.

Ok so I can do the auto to manual blank, but not the oil pressure and water temp to blank?

You can take out the water temp and oil pressure gauges and blank them off on your original gauge cluster, you just can't use a factory idiot light cluster.

Sorry but one more question then.
Can the blank be a piece of mild gauge aluminum or brushed sheet or something? Will that tie into the back somewhat nicely - and then that way I could paint it, as well as drill the indicator light I was thinking about.
