94 SC, went out to go someplace pulled the switch, no headlights! Checked the fuse in the distro box its good, still have dash lights all others just no headlights. Seems it could be the switch for whatever reason, anybody else had this happen or an insight on what it could be?
Manual does not show any other light fuses or relays, even covers no lights but also says the main fuse would cause the dash lights to go out, so that is why I think it could be the switch.
Switch, common problem, especially in that time period. The switch really can't handle the current the headlights pull, so over time, the contacts in the switch wear out. I would replace the switch and verify that it fixes the problem. I would also install a headlight relay kit. It also makes the headlights slightly brighter.
Ok was going over to the dealer to check on switch they started to work, but then the radio died and they are not on the same circuit even!
I dont know, gremlins I guess. I had played with the hi/lo switch checking things when I noticed they had returned. Well I will see what they do now that it has occured once, will get a switch next time.
Headlights just went out today. Can pull back on the dimmer switch and they shine as long as the switch is being pulled. How did you fix your headlights? 1997 Ranger
Never did change the switch, it is almost not the switch but the contact in the steering column. I flash the hi/lo and they work, have gone out 1 time since. Maybe the switch is the culprit but I am thinking more of the steering column so might just need to take the covers off and spray with contact cleaner.
Since it is electrical without a lot of use I dont think its really age but more of contaminants causing loss of contact.
Sorry to bring up an old post but I did a search and came across this. I am having the same issue, just started 2 nights ago. I have a 87 xlt 2.9L if that helps. For a while now the lights would flicker from time to time, not go completely out just dim a little, then all of a sudden they just didnt work. All the fuses are fine, but I noticed my turn signals dont work either, the flashers do but not the signals. Is it just time for a new switch, or do I possibly have some other issue? I thought maybe a grounding issue, but I cant really see any thing. Thanks in advance
Well I have had 2 episodes of this and both appear to have been resolved by working the passing light switch! I dont know but that is what I did and I never did have a problem with the parking or turn signals. maybe just need to clean the contacts or something. When my f350 had problems with the taillights it was loose ground in the system. Eould work then wouldnt or would go out when I tried the turnsignals.
