I've got just over 31K miles on my '06 Ranger, still wet behind the gears. FORD tells me I don't need to change the fluids in my tranny or rear end till 100K. I'm skepticel about this. My gut is telling me to change atleast the tranny fluid, I am thinking of going to Royal Purple in both. Looking for suggestions;
Should I go with FORD or should I go with my gut and go Purple?
Ford is right, however, I put royal purple in my t-case, tranny and diffs as soon as I feel the parts are broken in. I do it sooner, but at your mileage would be great. With synthetics there's less heat and friction, you get better wear out of your parts and even a tad better mpg. It won't hurt anything by listening to ford, but there's benifits to be had by switching to synthetics as soon as possible. I also run mobil 1 in my engine. With full synthetic's in my drivetrain, I average a round 20 mpg on my 4x4 rangers in mixed driving. It lets the engine and drivetrain run cooler and thats allways a good thing for power and mpg, plus parts life. This is my opinion and experience, others may differ.
I just did a complete tranny flush at 37,000 because most trannys need more frequent care than what the manual states. Ford trannys are good but need maint. to keep them at optimum performance especially in extreme cold/hot areas of the country. How the truck is driven and where it's driven plays a big part too.

Thanx.
Ford is wrong. the differentials can go a long time, but the transmission will wear out prematurely unless the fluid is replaced on a regular basis, every 30,000 miles or so, especially if you haul heavy loads or doing a lot of towing.
Keeping up on this maintenance is the difference between a tranny crapping out at 90,000 miles, versus lasting over 200,000 miles.
I wouldn't go so far as to say ford is wrong. However they don't know everyone's situation. I have manual trannies, but it seems a little far fetched that they would say the tranny fluid is good for a 100,000 miles unless it has synthetic fluid from the factory. Even then the filter would still get dirty. What does the manual say about schedualed tranny fluid changes? My pops had an 86 tempo and a 95 escort with automatics. He put over 200,000 miles on both of them and never had the fluid changed. He gave the cars a way and there still being driven as far as I know. I'm not sugesting thats OK to do, but he was lucky that way. I wish I had my rangers owners manual here, so I could check it out, now I'm curious. My manual is in my truck which is at my dealers body shop from where my wife rolled it. 100,000 miles auto tranny fluid change just doesn't sound right, not even for the t-case. As Bear River said, maybe the diffs, but even thats pushing it as far as proper upkeep. I'm sure a lot of people never change thier diff fluid, but I'm sure it's recomended that you do so. I change all my fluids some what often as I wheel alot. Also I just like tinkering with my vehicles and like to keep them in tip top shape if it needs it or not.
I change tranny, transfer case, and diffenential (both) lube EVERY 30,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 ATF in the tranny and transfer case, Mobil 1 75w 90 in the front diff, and Mobil 1 75w 140 in the rear diff
I've got the 5-speed manual, and I went ahead n changed it. Is used tranny fluid supposed to REAK? Replaced it with the afore mention Royal Purple for the lower friction less heat aspect. Thaks for the suggestions and info.

I am guesing you put in the Royal Purple Syncromax? If so that is what I have been running in my 99 with the 2.5L four and 5 speed. I tow a 3000# tent camper any ware from 500 to 2000 miles a year, I have put 30,000 miles on this secon fill of the Syncromax and it is holding up very well compared to the plain old ATF. Previously I changed the ATF yearly and it would be brown instead of red and the shifting would be notchy and stiff.
The Royal Purple is still purple and shifts are still smooth after 30,000 miles and 2.5 years!
The royal purple helps a manual tranny shift better in the winter when it's cold and stiff as well. I use royal purple in my drivetrain because I can order it from my off/road catalogs and they send the right RP for the application. Be it the tranny, t-case or diffs. I use mobil 1 in the engine and can get it at walmart. I like both, RP and mobil 1.
