My 2000 F350 just recently started doing this. When I use my lights at night I'm getting a pulsating reaction (bright, dim, bright, dim, bright, dim). It's not like they get too dim to see or too bright that I have other drivers flashing their lights at me. I've noticed something like it on Honda Goldwings I've passed on the highway. If you know what I'm talking about. It does it no matter if I'm going down the road or at a stop. It never gets brighter or dimmer no matter what speed the engine is running either cruising or at an idle. Also I have noticed my battery light in the dash every now and again goes to blinking but not all the time like the lights. I just put 2 brand new batteries in it back in Nov 08. Anybody have any ideas or ever experienced anything like this. If so let me know. Thanks for any info.
It's likely that the alternator's brushes have worn down to the point where they are no longer supplying dependable amounts of field winding current.
Though you COULD replace just the regulator/brush module, you'll likely find the brushes have also worn sizable grooves into the brush rings, and that's a separate problem you can't solve easily.
Though I am loathe to recommend a rebuilt alternator (most rebuilders are doing substandard work nowadays), a replacement of yours is probably in order.
