Do I need 2 converters?
Do I need 2 converters?
Hello, I have a 1985 with a 300 CI 6 cyc. I am going to replace the whole exhaust system. I notice the system from the factory has 2 catalytic coverters. Do I need 2 converters to pass emissions? Does the first converter really do anything, the one right after the exhaust manifold? Someone has said that one really dosent do much. Both of mine are clogged and keep my truck down to 5 mpg. I put my hand over the tailpipe and the exhaust seeps out so slowly it makes me mad.

Boy people are getting lazy around here. Sorry you had to wait so long to get some one to reply to your post. As for replacing the two cats on your truck, it all depends on where you live. Check with your states emission laws. The first cat on your truck's exhaust is a pre-catalytic converter. Its purpose is to heat up quicker and start the conversion process before the second cat gets started. Basically its just another cat that gets in the way of engine performance. Usually the best thing to do is to replace these two cats with a single high flow cat!

Well another note is that you will find that there was only one cat and the other was some sort of resonation chamber to damper the sound so you only need 1 at the most.
