4X4 help

my 4X4 only works sometimes. last night i flipped to 4X4 hi and the light came on and i felt it engage, then turned it to 4X4 low and i felt/heard it drop in and it was all fine. then today i flip the switch and no light and it wont engage this has been gong on a lot any help?

For starters, you can't go from high to low without being in neutral. Other than that, its hard to tell exactly what the problem is... can you be a little more specific?

yes i do put it in neutral. but it is just a hit or miss some times the 4x4 works ans sometimes it doesn't. i just cant figure it out.

Are you in 4x4 just judging by the dash light or are you getting out and checking it by trying to move the u joints themselves?

both, i have gotten out and the front joints will move along with the shafts

When the light is out but the 4x4 is "engaged" try to turn the front driveshaft. Seems to me like a simple loose connection somewhere....hopefully!

Check your connection on the 4x4 switch and the connections on the transfer case. They are just plug ins. If the light comes on when in 4x4 and not engaging, could be vac issue--if stock hubs, or hubs themselves.
