Replaced master cylinder and brake lines on 87 Ranger and after filling the system with Brake fluid, I am unable to build pressure or Bleed lines. After pumping the foot pedal many times and holding the pedal down, opened the bleeder valve and a very small amount of fluid comes out but no air. Could there be a problem with the calipers. This truck sat around for a coupe years without use. We have installed a plug at the master cylinder for the back brakes.
Sounds like you still have air in the brake lines. There is probably fluid before and after the air bubbles. Keep pumping and adding fluid to the master cylinder reservoir. The pedal should start firming up.
It also helps to bench bleed the master cylinder before installation. That doesn't mean you won't still have to bleed it at the wheels, but it will go much faster. My buddy from high school has his own repair shop. He told me that he has a power bleeder. I'm not sure how it works, but he says he can bleed brakes in a snap.
A cheap vacuum bleeder will make 1 man bleeding easy. It will also make the first few purges easier, untill the air starts to purge and the pedal firms up. But keep at it, a little patience and as said above, the pedal will start to firm up as the air comes out. After all, the main symptom of air in the brake lines is a soft pedal that goes down a long way before doing anything.
I'm still not able to get any pressure on the brake pedal. We plugged the rear line on the master cylinder hoping to at least get front brakes working but to no avail. We get fluid thru the caliper bleeder but no real pressure. Could the calipers be frozen up or bad?
Did you try bench bleeding the master?? This is important, so as to get the air out of the valving in the master cylinder.. You could try removing the lines from the calipers to see if the fluid is moving from the master-one at a time to check if one of the lines has a clog, or if one of the calipers is no good..I once bought a rebuilt master that ended up being worse than the unit I took out-went back and they gave me another master no problem..Also, you didn't loose the pin that sticks out of the power booster, did you??? That pin is VERY important so your master will function!! There is also a measurement setting for that pin-it should stick out no more than 1 inch-as the measurement is like .990 inch.. Check it out-let us know what you find..
