Got Troubles Testing

Hi Guys,
Just purchased a 1990 F250 7.3 IDI, has 280k on it and looks to be all original under the hood. Here's what I've done so far, there are no visible leaks on the fuel system all the way to the 3-way connection on LH side back of block. Took main line coming from transfer pump to filter head, installed guage, spun engine and got about 5lbs of fuel pressure with no leak back.
Made sure the cold start advance system is working, done continuity test on cold start sensor with engine cold, made loop. Took test light and check harness for current going to cold start advance and fast idle solenoid, seemed okay.
Glow plug relay was burned a little on the hot side and was not getting very much current to glow plugs, test light was real dim. Took 2 #10 wires and a 15 amp push button switch and attached to the top of the glow plug relay with everything still in place with 2 nuts. Now it will light the test light up. Then checked each glow plug with test light hooked to + side of the battery to see if they were grounded out, all seemed to be good. Now for the problem, you can plug it in for about 3 hours and time you hit the switch it's running. Try to start it without being plugged in, hold the glow plugs for about 2 minutes, depress accelerator down with the key switch on, and let her rip, it won't even act like it wants to start. Brand new batteries from Ford dealership, also it you let it sit for a few minutes plugged in or not there isn;t any fuel at the shcrader valve on the filter head. Where have I gone wrong ? Thanks in advance for any input you can give me.

Nathan

You should only have to run the glow plugs for about 10-15 seconds on manual before starting. Two minutes is way too long and you might have cooked them.

You may also have some air intrusion problems if the filter head is bleeding off.
But I think your problem lies with the glow plugs.

10 seconds is about what I do to fire up down to around zero.

Sounds like the relay is getting weak on the glow plug relay/controller.

A working glow plug system draws about 200 amps.
