One of "Those" days

Been battling bad glow plug system all winter, it doesnt help that we have had almost 10*f or lower almost everyday. Ive already chewed through a starter. replaced that, went to go start it this morning and the whole things frozen, fuels geled. charging system is worthless, its 4* today. I have 7 zd-11 glow plugs (penny glow plugs) but i have no idea how to tear into it. how much can i expect to pay a shop to do this? I figure the gpr will be anywhere from $30to60. and i have the glowplugs (minus 1). I have removed my turbo numerous times and changed out for the wicked wheel, also did my enitre exhaust. how tough is it? could i do it myself? thanks for the help, trying to make it to class and pay the bills, neither is happening today

Driver's side is easy, passenger's side is not so easy b/c of all the stuff you have to remove. Get yourself a piece of tubing that will fit over the end of the glowplug. What you'll do is break it loose with a 1/4" drive deep 10mm socket, and then put the tube on the end to spin it and pull out. Otherwise it gets tight with the socket in place to get it out. If you've pulled your turbo then this will be super easy for you! Torque down the rocker bolts too while you're in there!

ITs very simple I am doing mine next week since it will be warm. I look forward to it. For a shop to do it I was quouted from a 100-150 dollars per valve cover so i am going to do it my self with my neighbor.

I found the torque values for you:

GPs - 14ft-lbs
Rocker arm bolts - 20ft-lbs(just check them).
Lower injector hold down bolt to 120 in-lbs (NOT FT-LBS!!!)
Double check wires to make sure they won't contact valvetrain.

Can't you plug her in to help her get warm & fired up? You're probably not running synthetic and if you switch over to it, you'll notice a HUGE difference. I did. It's worth it.

Wow great info - thanks! Nope, no synthetic - i was kicking myself becuase someone talked me into it right after i had just done an oil change. ha! I usually plug in and it helps but there were 3 cars in the driveway and i had just come home from a long day of work. Excuses excuses!. reps left

Changing a glow plug is about as hard as changing a spark plug. It's just getting all the stuff out of the way so you can reach the glow plugs. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...overs-off.html

Getting the VC's off is the hard part, changing the GP's is pie. You'll want a 10mm deep well socket to get to them. They are kind of hard to see at first, they are tucked in above the injectors. It's not that hard, took me about 3 hrs. the first time I did it (and only time so far).
