I've got a 91 f250 with the 460/E4OD combo and I'm looking for some input. I've got what seems to be the TC shudder problem but it is very intermittent. I've done a flush and that seemed to help a little, but it still happens. The tranny also seems to slip. Example, when you get on it the tach will go to 2200-2500rpm and shift all the way to 3rd without any noticeable drop or rise in rpm's. It doesn't lack power, and the truck is suprisingly quick to come up to speed (40-50mph). My question is, would a TC on it's last leg cause symptoms like this in addition to the shudder? I'm hoping to just replace the TC for now until I can spend the big money on a proper rebuild. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Well I didn't get a chance to check pressures and today my tranny made me cry. I was towing a jeep home when I began to smell some fluid getting hot. When I pulled over and looked under the truck I had a nice 12" puddle with more pouring out of the inspection hole. Oh well, time to find a tranny shop!!
I had to walk away from the truck for a couple of days, to keep myself sane. After getting the truck home and refiling the fluid to the normal level I started it up to see if it would still leak. Well no leak, but when I shift into R- the tranny sounds like there are a million little pieces of metal shifting around in the converter. It only does it for 3-5 seconds and then stops, when I then shift into any of the drive gears it does the same. It sounds to me like I demolished the guts of the converter and overheated the crap out of it. I will be pulling it this weekend, maybe sooner if I can swing it. Any advice or anything to look for? Thanks again.
I'll keep the results posted, but my truck would ony shudder while driving. Usually when you get back on the throttle to maintain speed. Now, after the problem I had last week, it makes noises just sitting in the driveway.
Just an update, sorry it took so long. The tc was completly shot. When I pulled the pump to change the o-ring and stator seal we could see that the pump was shot as well. With both of those replaced and a good flush the tranny shifted great, but ALOT of junk went through the tranny so who knows how long it will stay alive. Now I've got a 92 one ton that I'm trying to figure out.
