Shock absorber problem

I replaced my rear springs on my '60 with a set of used from a '64. I think the arch is deeper on the '64 springs because my rear end sits 2-3" higher. The problem is that my shocks are now too short. Do I go back to the local parts guy and see if he can find me a longer shock? Add a few pounds on the frame and try to compress the springs? Or remove my top shock mounts and weld them lower on the crossmember. Anyone else run into this before?

Measure the distance you have between the shock studs i.e. 27" then you can find some shocks that are longer than 27" however, they will compress to less than 27". With the measurements some part store can tell you which shocks especially speciality shops. There are some experts on the site that could probably tell you which shocks to get by the distance between shock studs. You can also check the shocks for the 64.

1957/67 F100 rear springs are the same width and length.

The difference is in the number of spring leafs, and their thickness.

Even tho both springs may have the same number of leafs, if one has thicker spring leafs, that changes the load rate.

1957/60 rear shocks were not used on 1961 and later trucks.

If I had the specs, I would post them, but the parts catalogs do not list that kind of info.

The 64 shocks have the round fitting on both ends, Mine has a stud on top and the round fitting on the bottom.

When Ford changed the original shock part numbers to first Rotunda, then to Auto-Lite and finally to Motorcraft part numbers, these specific Rotunda/Auto-Lite/Motorcraft only shock catalogs had all the specs.

Who has any of these catalogs today? Not I. Most of the dealers have tossed these away, so finding any is a crap shoot.

My guess would be that Green Sales Company in Cincinnati OH, the world's largest obsolete parts vendor, has them.

You might call them and ask for assistance: 513-731-3304 help line / 800-543-4959 when ordering parts.

Ask for Dave Cooper.
