ive got an 81 ford f-150, i had a 300-6 but i blew the head gasket in it, and i had a 351 v8 in another 80 model f250. so instead of taking the 3hrs or so to change the headgasket i wanted more hp and torque so i just swapped the v8 in. after a couple weekends, as im still in highschool, i got it in, well i started it and it jumped and ran right away, but it backfired through the carb, so thinking it was gas problem i switched to propane (running dual fuel) but it still did it. also its missing also. when i rev it to about 3500 rpm it clears out (when i can get it there because of backfiring) i have checked all the plug wires and checked them with the firing order and there correct, do y'all think that it is my timing? or because it might be missing? im probably goin to pull wires off the rotor while its running and see if a couple of cylenders arnt firing. im a shade-tree mechanic and ive been doin this since i was 9, so if ya want to get into detail ill most likely understand. appriciate any help asap as id like to drive to school every day. p.s. engine was running fine when pulled.
I got a 85 f-250 with the 460 in it and had a simular prblem. My problem turned out to be the ignition modual which is a box on the driverside fender and bad connection a the distributor.Check were the distributor plugs into the factory wiring and check hard for corrosion and the ignition modual can be tested.I recommend taking the modual to ford and let them test it.Timing can be your problem too.Check the distibutor and ignition modual first.
so i got that done i had to move the destributor a lil more but i got it done, i was putting a new water pump in and a bolt broke (was almost rusted through) before it even got tight, and it leaking so im going to pull it off and try again (sigh!) thanks again for the fast responses!
