Help with gearing

I have an 01 F250 x-cab lifted 3.73's with 315-75-16 tires. I want to change my gearing to either 4.30's or 4.56. I've read all of the threads on here and i would like to know exactly which way would be the best way to go. I do mostly city driving and don't tow everyday but when i do i want to be able to handle it more smoothly.

Also where would be a good place to buy new gears and manufacturer would you suggest? Those of you that have done this change what should i expect to pay for this job total? Thanks in advance.

Going with 4.56 will give you an effective ratio of 4.16. Meaning: it's like have a 4.16 rear end with stock tires. I would choose that simply because that is around my effective ratio (4.20) and it is really working well for me. The V10 does well with 4.30 (effective) when towing and 3.73 (effective) for straight highway cruising but 4.10 (effective) is a great ratio and should have been available with the 2V V10, IMO.

Gears can had at a number of places. Randy's Ring and Pinion is a good place to start. Yukon makes good gears but I personally prefer OEM, they're quieter but unfortunately not available in 4.56 so that was kinda useless for me to type.

$800 per axle including parts seems fair to me after watching the guy do it but some charge higher. Setup is crucial for long life and quiet operation so make sure you go to someone who has done it at least, say...50 times.

Thanks Monsta for all the info. I have two shops in mind that do all my drive line and 4x4 stuff, so that's not a problem.

Also while you have it open consider adding a soft locker or switched locker while you've got it open. Saves some bucks if you want one later down the road. And if you have a 4x4 don't forget the front axle.

You should have a Dana 50 front and a Ford 10.5 rear.

I have the same size tires on a 4" lift. I went with 4.88s and am glad I did. If you tow anything remotely heavy I suggest you get these over the 4.56s. This gets you closr to the magic "4.30" ratio everyone wants with the size tires we have. I used motive gear D50 gears up front and 10.25 gears with 10.25 pinion bearings in my 10.5 case.

Thanks for the info, did you notice a difference in mpg after doing the gears? Right now i am getting around 9 around town empty with these heavy tires. I'm hoping to gain a little mpg and power at the same time to justify the purchase.

Well surfing the web for different prices i seem to find yukon gears all over. I found these two sets on ebay. My question is what else do I need to purchase to hand to the shop to do this install? Do i need to buy an install kit?

eBay Motors: FORD STERLING 10.25" 4.88 RING AND PINION YUKON GEAR (item 330254376119 end time Feb-14-09 11:10:09 PST)
eBay Motors: DANA 50 FORD EXCURSION 4.88 RING AND PINION YUKON GEAR (item 230318441454 end time Feb-07-09 08:36:44 PST)

It's funny the "shop" is letting you supply the parts. They loose thier markup that way. You will definetly need an install kit with the 10.25 inner pinion bearing/race.

My unloaded mileage at highway speeds went down slightly to (less than 1mpg) 10mpg. My city MPG went up considerably. I get close to 11 in town. You will gain ****-tons of torque. Like "night and day" gains. Almost to the point to drive jelousy into diesel owners.
