engine replacement 2.5L

I have a 1998 2.5L with 146000 miles. It is making engine noises and foam on oil cap. A little white foam on dipstick also. I added Bar's radiator treatment and it seems to have helped..........plus changed the oil (which looked pretty clean)
With this all said............if I were to change out the motor with a used one, is the 1998 year 4 banger the only one I can use?, or would a 99 or 00 or 01 be ok? Is it better to put a used one in with about 60k on it or get a rebuilt which costs more?

Thanks for the input.

Do you do a lot of short trip, in city driving? You may have a problem of condensation in the engine and it's not being driven enough to get it warmed up to evaporate the condensed moisture. Are you certain the problem is with the block or head? You may just have a gasket leak - head or manifold. If it were mine, I'd do some checking to see if I had a water/coolant leak and, if so, what was the source of the leak. Your engine is just well broken in. Its worth doing some trouble shooting before going as far as replacing it.

I heard the engine making clicking noises when putting in garage. Checked oil fill cap and noticed the white foam........pulled dipstick and found foam and water running down stick. I am assumming antifreeze leaking from gasket or block. Usually drive 8-20 miles, but sometimes only a couple.............also it is winter in WI so cold weather may keep things cool. In any event I will drive till she blows.....................my question remains if other year motors will worksuch as 99,00,01 etc........................THANKS FOR ANY HELP!

Antifreeze and oil mix together to form a goo that is all but impossible to remove and does not lubricate very well. When you saw 'water', was it water or anti-freeze? Clear or green/orange in color? Does it use coolant or oil? It can get so cold in WI that the oil never gets warm enough to evaporate the condensation formed from combustion. A whitish foamy deposit can form on the inside of the oil filler cap and the inside of the dipstick that just is normal. You have to get it HOT for half an hour at least to get rid of it or change the oil. Take a trip to Florida, and it will all seem like it never happened...

You can use a whole variety of engines. The 2.5 can be replaced by other year 2.5s, or older 2.3 or 2.0 lima blocks, but to use the newer dohc 2.3 would be more difficult.

Well........hoping it is just condensation..........that would be a blessing! It doesn't seem to use antifreeze, and the oil is always up till it needs change. I had a 93 2.3L with 184k that never used oil at all. The underside just rotted away. Got this truck with 131k from FL. 2 years ago, and it had this engine clicking then and it has gotten louder. Sounds like it comes from deep inside motor. O well, drive it till it dies is my moto.
Thanks for anyone's reply. They always help.

Try a mechanic's stethascope-you should be able to narrow down the source of the noise. They cost about $10.--mine was closer to $30., and I'd have paid twice that, for the problems it has helped me solve.
