hello all. need some help. i am running a 302 w/ edlebrock1405 man. choke w/weiand stealth manifold(i know, i know). most of whats's in the compartment is new, but these are the ones that pertain to this problem. o.k.- so she has been idleing high for a while. wouldn't even go into adjusting carb without tach. so i got my tach and installed yesterday. the main problem is that i don't really know what rpm range(s) i want to be in.
in park i am guessing i want 9-10? so i put it at 10 flat, go to drive and she drops to 5, the most i have been able to get is right at 7. but at seven it seems like it is still a little rough for my taste. at five she runs, but sputters. not very familiar with carbs, any advice or specs?
-thanks
Just as important as the idle speed, is idle mixture. Turn both mixture screws all the way in (do not overtighten), then back them out 2 full turns each. That will get you in the ballpark, then you can tweak for highest idle. I strongly suggest using a vacuum gauge to tune your idle - this is a much more useful tool than a tachometer. Much, much more useful. Tune the mixture screws to achieve maximum vacuum as seen on the gauge, then you can change the idle speed to what's comfortable.
