Mis-understood

As some of you all might know my personal quote in my signature was -"Sometimes I just feel like kickin' people"- well i just received an e-mail from a user who thought that I was refering to him/her. I replied and told them what really was the case. But it seems that when typing it is really hard to communicate and tell people what you are trying to, often it seems like people take it the wrong way from how you meant it. Anyway, has this ever happened to any of you all? Anyone ever got the wrong idea?

Yep, just about every time I post something I don't quite use the right words or phrases and it sounds different than intended to quite a few. Now I keep going back to old posts to explain myself if necessary. It's hard when you can't express emotion while typing, also.

Some of my most in-depth e-mail discussions were with people I shouldn't have had to explain anything to. It's like that sometimes, but I'd rather spend a while setting things right than leave a resentment open that never should have been.

On the other hand, there have been cases where the objector was so far off base that I decided "The Bandit" said it best:

Hey,

When you communicate with someone it is said that 50% of the message is conveyed with body language!

And another 30% is conveyed with "tone of voice".

That leaves just 20 for the actual message!

Don't know if it's true, but it's what I have heard.

That's why most of us use different font color or size and make it obvious that it is a quote or signature. That usually helps to disway any animosity.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Nov-02 AT 02:10 PM (EST)]I think it could also do with the mood the person is. I know that has happened to me before, i see something typed that could go either way and if i'm having a bad day then it looks to me like it is a bad message.

It's really hard to "joke around" with someone when typeing which is what i'm almost always doing. friendly makeing fun of each other, i always do that kind of stuff when talking to someone in person or on the phone, you have to remember to take it out when you are typeing to someone.

This discussion reminds me of the saying I have on my office door at work:

"I don't have an attitude problem - you have a perception problem."

Of course, in that case I really *do* have an attitude problem, so it's not quite the same.

If each of us could pick a second identity (just for fun) to fulfill a second existence that would parallel each day of our primary , current existence , I would probably choose Sgt. Schultz from "Hogans Heroes" as I vould love to beable to enunicate in that Americanized German accent that Schultz was so good at........he vass der best at za language thing........i'm exposing my linguistic ignorance here but its all done in fun so what the Hell""-----This can get into "don't pick on my Ethnicity" thing but , in my opinion people are much too sensitive nowadays anyway , so they'll just have to gut it out I guess........Karl J. is very knowledgeable in Za german and he knows all those long-german words that take lots of space to type, and lots of study to translate , at least for me anyway........fd ------I'm not sure if this related to the thread but I thimk it is in some way or another .....fd

How about Linus from the comic strip "peanuts"? Remember him telling Lucy to "STOP CRITIZING ME!!! Or "I love mankind its People I can't stand".

What I try and do is reread my post before I post them. Pretend that I don't know up from down. Does the post make sense? Does my meaning come through?

Even with that, I come across my previous posts and find spelling errors and other nonsense that shouldn't be there.

I guess it keeps me human.

but then:

On the other hand, there have been cases where the objector was so far off base that I decided "The Bandit" said it best:
