Ok I have only driven a 300 once, and it didn't have a tach, and it was a C6 and the motor didn't run real good anyway, it sounded like it had a major vaccum leak somewhere. I have my 06 sold, and I will be in the market for a $2k or less truck now.
I am asking what a 300's power is like? I know they are awesome and reliable, and will drag 302's(not knocking I might end up with one) with a single turn of the crank.
Does it rev slow like a diesel, or is it faster like a gas engine or is it neither? What is the best way you could describe it? The way some of you guys make it sound, it pulls real hard till about 3k rpm, and then nothing, but is it a fast 3k rpm or is it more slow? Or would it be like putting a 3k rpm rev limiter on my 5.4 liter, and then driving it around? Would you think a 300 would be faster than most older V8's if they could only rev as high as the 300 could. If it helps you can narrow it down to the EFI 300's only.
I will probably buy a truck based on the amount of rust not the engine and stuff as long as it's 4x4 and runs, and it's street legal, but I'd still like to know more about the 300. Thanks in advance.
Scroll down to the 300/4.9 section for a little info.
It is what it is and has served a purpose in everything from light truck as family drivers to heavy trucks as work horses, and in farm and industrial equipment. I even know of one person building one to power an airplane. It is reliable and solid. I don't agree with the emotionality injected by some in describing it (awesome, indestructible, etc.) which tends to go beyond reality in to the area of mythology...and no, that is not bashing! But, each to his/her own descriptions.
I had a '79 302 A/t...it served it's purpose but I sold it and found my '83 with the 300 and I snatched it on the spot. I have always preferred the I6 for my purposes over the V8's.
You don't mention economy and gas mileage, so I suspect a 6 isn't really gonna be your cup of tea. Keep in mind a 300 cu inch engine, especially for a 6, isn't a slouch. After 26 years of driving mine I would describe it as extremely reliable, simple (carbed), economical, low rpm torquey, low revver, starts right up, and has oodles of space around it to replace an external part. I've never even had the valve cover off mine, and burns/drips no oil on non-syn oil. I keep telling my wife "Why would I want to buy a new truck?"
And also, the power of any vehicle will feel different depending on rear end gearing and what transmission you are running. I'm sure an NP435/4.10 300-6 F-150 would be a different animal compared to a C6/2.7x or something on the other end of the spectrum.
General consensus is this... They last forever. Seem to be overall trouble free. But, the 302/351w are extremely reliable, also. But, this is about the 300-6, so we'll try and keep it that way.
Are you looking for an auto or manual? Is it going to be a farm truck, or a highway cruiser?
the 300 is a square motor... an older guy that built motors told me thats good square motors love to rev.... i think the only reason then fall off after 3k is because it out breaths itself maybe someone with a crazy ported head will chime in...
but hey it has power below idle.... who needs it to rev to 6.5k
I'm just looking for a 4x4 truck thats not a total rust bucket, or a rolling wreck, and runs real good. I want something I don't feel like I need to baby, or take it easy on, something I can drive through a creek and on gravel roads, and it will still take me to work and back on nasty weather days.
I will probably get a 87-96 F-?50, based on the condition of the truck, not the engine inside it, because I'm sure Ford didn't put a bad motor in any of their trucks, and I would be happy with either motor(I know the 5.8 is great had one in a 94 with an RV cam). I am kind of looking for a manual, but it's not set in stone, I'm sure a C6, E40D, or a AOD is probably tougher than the M5OD, but not a ZF, or the any of the 4 speeds, so I'm not real picky. I am however curious about the 300, because I know it's probably the best, and fairly common.
