Can "cold idle" be modified?

Even after driving my truck for quite some time in the colder weather, the fast idle still pops up. I tend to leave it running often when stopping for errands and walking back out to 1300 rpms is quite loud and not very fuel efficient. The idiot guage shows me well off of "cold"...any thoughts? This is also an issue when using the remote start. Ford says it will stay at high idle until the brake pedal is depressed...should a sensor control this?

I suspect the AC compressor may have some influence on your situation. The AC system is apart of the defroster, it dries the air being pushed on the windshield and the engine is usually spun up a little higher to keep it running for when the clutch cycles.

If nothing else, try turning the heater/AC off when you leave it running.

I would be a little disappointed that a big 6.4 PSD had to run higher RPM to accomodate the AC compressor but I'll try it. Any idea if the operating temp high idle cut out can be adjusted with an aftermaket tuner/programmer?

I have a customer with an '08 and his does the same thing. IIRC it makes no difference if the AC/heat, etc, are on, the truck idles up every time you let it sit there. I've been curious for a while if this is a factory programmed thing or what. Maybe one of our resident techs will jump in and enlighten me.

What you are experiencing is a built in (PCM controlled) cold weather idle strategy. This automatically kicks in anytime the outside temperature is below 32*. As already stated, the heat/AC makes no difference. Once the truck has been idling for 130 seconds, if the EOT (engine oil temperature) is not 158* it will idle your truck up automatically. Once the 158* temp is reached it will return to normal idle. It will keep doing this to maintain the optimal EOT of 158*. It is possible that a programmer could change this, but honestly I would not do that. This strategy is there to prevent wet stacking and control coking which are both common issues of a diesel motor idled in cold weather...

well if you're really concerned about it being"not very fuel efficient" just turn it off. i bet idle will drop right down to 0 and stay there until you turn the key. teehee
