shaking steering wheel

My steering wheel has been shaking at all speeds for a couple weeks now and i remember hearing a click a few times when making sharp turns which i thought was a stone flying up hitting something. At first I thought maybe it was tires being out of balance. So I kind of ignored it.But now I know it has to be something else. I have been looking on the web and it could be quite a few things and dont know what to look for or check. Im not a mechanic. If anyone had this problem or knows what to check for and how to check it please let me know. Thanks in advance! Its a 2005 f-150 4x4 with 35,000 miles. Starts shaking when I start driving. Gets a little worse as I go faster and over 60 or so mph it gets a little better. Tires are wearing even. I would take it to a garage but money is a little tight nowadays.

Grab the top of the tire and push/pull it in/out. if there is movement you may have a bearing failing or loose. If no movement take the wheel off and spin the hub paying attention to the brake disk. You will be looking to see if there is any wobble due to a warped rotor. Of course do these checks on both sides. Also check for play in the tie rod ends.

best thing to do since your a little green on mechanic skills is to take it to a good alignment center like goodyear and have the it inspected they will tell you what is bad and what it costs to repair it. about 40.00 then you decide if you want to fix it youself. you can save a lot of time and money this way buy not replacing good parts.shaking is a saftey issue i wouldn't push too long. i've done this many times when i can't find the source, eventually you learn what to look for, especially if they will let you watch. benifits of small towns. Jerks in the big cities think they are gods and don't allow customers in shop.

I agree. Don't mess with jacks if you don't have to.

Is the problem intermittent or is it a constant vibration?

Im experiencing a vibe that comes and goes and cant figure it out. Would love a lead if you have any!!

I would start by rotating tires and see if vibration moves to the rear (seat) You can inspect rotors and bearings when rotating tires..

I rotated my tires on the drivers side and thats what it was,the front tire. I would have bet that it was the steering box or something else. I do have a click when i move steering wheel while it is parked and turned off. And I went under and held the tie rod where it goes into the rack and pinion while someone turned the steering wheel and could feel where the click was, thats why i was thinking thats what it was.Is that normal to have a click! I hope so. Anyway it was the tire now I need to get some and dont know what brand lasts longer for about 100 dollars a piece. Thanks guys for all your input!!
