Howdy.
So last week I replaced the air filter on my 74 f100...360 motor & c6 trans...
The nxt morning I start off to go to work with no problems. My truck AWAYS starts with the cold start procedure....so I stop to get some gas and try to start her and it just cranks and cranks with no start. I remove the gas cap and put it back...check cables and stuff and then am finally able to start up by jamming the pedal to the floor and cranking until it started. It was the same the rest of the day. That was three days ago...today I turn the key and it starts fine...turn it off and then the same no start unless I jam the pedal and hold it. I replaced the fuel filter and put some sea foam in the tank, but have not driven it around yet. Any thoughts? Fuel pump? Carb? Air freshener? This started so suddenly that I wonder about the gas.
thank you kindly
I wouldn't think that the gas would be the problem that fast. Considering that there would still be the old gas in the line when you went to start it. Maybe check the choke linkage to see if something is hitting it and not letting it pull off.
The next time it happens, pull off the air cleaner and see if there's a pool of gas in the throat of the carb or the bottom of the intake. It sounds like it's flooding out. Doesn't sound like bad gas to me.

X2. The fact that it starts when you floor it makes me think flooding too. Course it could be that air freshener too.
Hey, thanks for the replies. I got it started and took off the air cleaner housing and did see gas pool up in the throat of the carb. What causes flooding ou, and why did it seem to start all of a sudden? Sorry, but I am learning these things as I go. Thank you again.
P.S. I decided to get rid of the air freshener anyway
Likely a stuck needle/seat/float assembly. Unless it was one of those cheap pine tree air fresheners. They're bad for causing flooding. Something about the pine oil fumes causing the octane to crystalize or something....
You've either blown a power valve, or have debris stuck in the needle and seat. It's time for a carburetor rebuild. Don't just try a patch job by simply cleaning the needle and seat, because if the carburetor was varnished enough to cause this problem, that gunk is hiding all over the carburetor.
Hello. It was one of those Playboy Bunny air fresheners...so no wonder it caused premature flooding. My wife told me not to hang it up!
I drove it around today and it flooded in town. No matter how long I waited to restart it, up to two hours, it flooded right away. I finally had to have a tow truck take me home, I'll be out of town the next couple of days and could not leave it parked in town. Sucked.
So, I will rebuild it when I return. That should be fun; I've never done it so it will be interesting to learn. Thanks everybody, I appreciate the time.
