Hello. I found an excursion for sale locally. It's a 2000 limited 4wd black with tan leather interior. it has 100k miles on it and the v10. I worry that its alot of miles, but i bought my bronco with 150k and she's strong (just need four doors). How durable is this powertrain? I can't really afford to do anything major (over $1k) on her for at least a year and it's going to be driven quite a bit. The guy is asking $7500 50% over book value probably because he's changed the grill, radio, tires, bull bar, etc. Is it unreasonable to think she could get to 150k without major service?
a Limited 00-03 X in Diesel with 100K miles is gonna run well over $10,000 in my experience. you would be looking at hi 100K to 200K+ miles for the same thing in Diesel... depends what suits your needs... see my https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...an-diesel.html thread... it turned out to produce some good comparison info on the gas diesel thing.. Remmy there are a few 5.4 V8's floating around too.... great option if not gonna be towing much or only towing small trailers
100K is not bad for a well maintained Gasser... Take the time to go through the service history and receipts... Look at what kind of oil they were buying... if its always had full synthetic oil, that is a big plus in my book... 100k is the time for a lot of service items such as tranny, transfer, diff fluids, coolant, plugs, wheel bearings etc.... if u go synthetic you have a few hundred bucks just in fluids etc to do all that... there are a few guides on buying an X in various threads and in the articles/specs pages... read the diesel ones to as lots of non-engine stuff applies to all X's
if you are doing the work yourself, you can do a lot for $1000... if you are paying some one else then different story... get an OASIS on it too....
i dont really need the diesel, plus the diesel is ridiculous in new york. the v8 is kinda wimpy i think for it. he just had the 100k maintenence done at the cost of 1600 which addressed all those things you mentioned. he wants 7k.....
If you have anything close to a heavy right foot you aint gonna want a 6.8 V-10 in an 8000+ pound SUV! Now if you feather it and are very alert at all times about revs and throttle position you may enjoy ok mpg's! I know with my driving style I would probably get 6-7 mpgs in a V-10!! LOL The diesel will run decent mpg's in town and on the highway16-21mpgs....... that's what I own and I could never go back to gasoline!
i realize i'm not going to get great mpg but i'm not really worried about it. compared to my bronco or the trans am i used to have, it cant be much worse. i rather spend 6k on a car and spend on gas than spend 30-40k on a new car and get twice the mpg. with my driving it'd take me at least 15 years for it to balance out and i dont plan on having this that long.
there are hardly any excursions in NYC let alone a black limited 4x4 thats up for sale. a diesel would probably be at least 4k more. i kind of like the idea of a v10 anywho. kinda like an srt10 suv (but 200hp less).
I bought my 2002 2wd V-10 with 96 K on it. I bought it because I was tired of trying to get into these small cars nowadays. Bad knee. Anyway I have had to replace one COP, The rear diff was totally shot due to much towing, Today I just changed the rear diff oil to red line 80-140 full synthetic, and replaced brake pads with Hawk brand pads. My X get's 15.5 mpg on the hwy, and a solid 11.5 mpg in city/hwy. It runs great is extremely comfortable and I hope I never get to a point where I would have to sell it. I bought it when gas was $5.00 a gal, so I got a good deal I thought. $6000.00. Since it's paid for gas and oil is all I have to worry about. My wife even likes to drive it on occasion. My friends like it, and make me the driver on some of our trips because it has so much room. Anyway to make a long post endless I love it, and if fuel price matters to you a whole lot then it might not be the best choice. I only have a 19 mile round trip to work so it doesn't bother me. I am a mechanic and I would not mind having a 7.3 diesel ,but I think for a lot of people that might not be mechanically inclined enough to own a technical diesel like the 6.0. That is unless you take it in for service, and don't work on them yourself. The diesel would not be the best choice. Just my opinion . Good luck
Go ahead, get it. you know what it looks like. you know what it drives like. Does it pass your test? Then get it. Dont worry if the price if a little high or if you are stealing it. Something is worth only what somebody else will pay for it.
Once you buy it you will never look back!! I didnt even when gas was 4.49/gal!!
PLUS, apparently Ford isnt making any more. I know, Ive been checking and my local dealer doesnt have any. lol

Reason: forgot to add a point.
My wife bought a 95 Bronco when it was only a couple years old with 40K miles on it. The previous owner put about $5K into it, black XLT, nice truck. At 98K miles the 5.8 was shot and prior to that $1,500 was put into the front end. After we put another 5.8 in it I vowed never to have to put a motor into another vehicle my wife drives.
In Fall of 2003 bought her a 104K miles 00 Excursion diesel. At first she didn't like it and thougt about driving her Bronco but within a couple weeks she liked it. Now 92K miles later she says it's the best vehicle she's ever owned. Did an Oasis report on it at time of purchase and learned the original owner put a full 100K mile warranty on it and the only thing done to it was a new head light switch! At 196K miles the motor and tranny have never been touched, both run on synthetic fluid.
The biggest problem with the modular Ford gas motors is they are prone to litteraly spit spark plugs. I know people with 5.4's and 6.8's who have had to replace a head because a spark plug decided it was time to go.
My wife has a short drive to work and still gets 16 mpg with the diesel. On the open road it gets high teens, 20 is not out of the question at the right speed.
regarding the spitting plugs, Ford fixed that issue by installing longer thread plugs. If they havent been blown outyet, chances are they have been replaced. Pull one yourself and see.
You can never pay too much for a vehicle that
1. isnt in production,
2 is what you want or
3. cant find every or anywhere.
You said it yourself. You cant find them in NYC. Maybe Kansas they will be cheaper because there are more of them. Who knows. You arent in Kansas and the market is not flush with x's in NYC. Keep waiting, the fewer there are, the more expensive they will be PLUS you wont be enjoying one on Monday.
Keep in mind, everyday, vehicles get trashed or totalled by insurance companies. Will the one you are considering be next?? Get it and live the lifestyle.
Get what you want and if you think the price is reasonable - buy it. Nobpdy is going to think any less of you becasue you bought something you want.
