Something I have always been curious about is why Ford used the 3V 5.4 exclusively instead of the 4V 5.4. With alot of people wanting more power out of their 04-08 F-150s, I was surprised the 4V wasn't ever offered as an option.
Is there a certain reason that the 04-08s or the new '09 don't have the 4V as an option? The 5.4 4V would be nice behind the 6 speed auto tranny.
Lots of people have wondered the same thing, myself included. The 4V is usually used in Lincolns, maybe Ford feels putting the 4V in a Ford branded vehicle would insult the engine.
I asked the same question a while back and it was suggested that cost was the factor for not using it. But, whats the cost of developing a modular 5.0 or Ecoboost?
Cost is the reason. Ford could have spent the money they spent developing the 3V with VCT on evolving the 4V and had a ~360 HP/400 TQ 5.4 4V with iVCT in 2004, but decided to pinch a penny instead.
A 4V is coming, but not with the 5.4L. It's coming with a new 5.0. L. Don't worry about displacement. It's going to make around 400 hp and 400 ftlbs of torque.
Hmm a 5.0L 4v, its going to have to rev to get those numbers. I wonder what will the "tow" engine be in the lineup if the diesel is postponed. The ecooboost... not, the 5.0L, not the 6.2L not available... not sure.

I would assume the 5.0. The 4.6L 3v in the stang is bound to be tuned differently than the same engine in the F-150. The current mod motors achieve thier peak at low rpm's.

No it won't, especially if TiVCT is implemented on the F150.
In the end, peak HP should occur close to 6000, peak TQ around 3000. There should be a large spread between them, similar to the newer Mercedes-Benz 4V V8s.
