Tranny Nightmare

My daughter owns a 1998 Ford Expedition with 121,000 mi. She was driving in 4wd-hi and stopped at a stop light. When she tried to move, the vehicle refused to budge and made clanking noises. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is she looking at an all new transmission, transfer case or whatever? If so, what kind of expense is involved. Any info would be appreciated.

It will be fairly expensive no matter the problem, none of the parts are cheap, even at a bone yard. I suggest that you have it towed to a shop that you trust and have it diagnosed. It's most likely the transmission or transfer case. A rebuilt transmission is about$1800 to $2400 installed here in the Tidewater area of Va. while it's out they may give you bad news regarding the transfer case, about another $1400 to $1800. From the noise you described I would look at the t-case first. It may be time for a newer model. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the reply. It's about what I expected. Apparently Expeditions have notorius failure rates with their drive systems. I'll pass this info on to my daughter.

Notorious failure rates? I've always heard positive things about the drivetrains in the Expeditions. One of the big reasons I bought one new back in 2002. Let us know what your daughter learns. I'm curious.

It could be some fairly inexpensive things... like the transfer case shift motor could have gone wacky and shifted into neutral. They are known for going bad.

Just curious why she was driving in 4-hi? I was just thinking that if she was in 4-hi on pavement that had too much grip she could have exploded a u-joint or driveline. But then odds on that are it's only going to be in one end, and the other end of the drive train would have allowed her to move.
