Ive been having some issues with my rear gas tank on my 1984 F250 in my sig.
1. My gas gauge is way off. I have replaced my gas tank with an oem one (19 gal) and the sending unit is brand new. The gauge reads empty accurately, but if I put $10 worth of gas in it, it reads over full. I know it takes more than 6 gals to fill my tank.
2. Whenever I try to fill my truck up, the gas doesn't go down the filler neck fast enough and it shuts off the pump unless I hold it and fill it at a very slow rate. Now, I searched and found out about the breather tube, so I hecked it, but I cant figure out which way it goes. One end has two flexible sections in it, the other is just straight. When I put it in one way, it kinks because the flex sections aren't in the filler neck bend, but with it the other way, it seems like its too long, so it kinks again. What the hell is going on?
You could try it without the breather tube and see how it works. This is commonly done on the diesels, and helps them tremendously, but diesel is not like gas, so I don't know if it would work or not, but it would not take much effort to try it.
I don't know what to tell you about yor fuel gauge problem. I know something like that bugs some people, but I personally would not worry about it. So long as you have 10 gallons left when the gauge starts falling, that is plenty of warning before you are going to run out. I have never actually checked it, but my 89 seems to so the same thing. When I fill it up, it pegs the needle and I can run it that way for several days, before it even moves, and then when it does start registering on the face of the gauge, it falls pretty quickly, so mine might be the same as yours, and it's never been replaced.
So I can take the breather tube out? I definitely give it a try. The gauge seems to read empty fairly accurately, it just makes it impossible to calculate any kind of mpg since the needle never falls at the same rate twice.
MPG has nothing to do with your gauge. You can calculate MPG without any gauge at all.
1. Fill the tank and record the miles on the odometer
2. Drive the truck till the next fill up.
3. Fill the tank back up and note the miles again.
4. Divide the miles traveled by the gallons used. = MPG
Thanks for the idea, I don;t know how I didn't figure that out. I did a lot of driving today and figured out I drove exactly 100 miles on 6.6gals of gas, so Im very happy with that. Now to figure out how to fill it in under a half hour lol.
Well, I finally got the time to take out the plastic hose to see if removing it would speed up the filling process. It worked! It fills up perfectly without that stupid hose. It probably took more time to fill up my truck once than it did to remove the dang hose lol. Thanks for the help guys.
Did you make sure you have the proper sending unit? There are at least three for your 1984, and they will all fit in the tank, but only one of them is right.
