As we have been blessed with some wonderful ice here in OK I decided to get out today after sitting around the house for a couple of days and was about ready to go crazy. So I put the truck in 4wd and eased out of the driveway, give it a little pedal and the rear wheels just spin. So I turn it back off and back into 4wd and the same thing. I do this several times with same result. The light always comes on but it never engages. Then I decide to turn it to 4wd low and see what happens. When I turn it to low the 4wd seems to engage in 4wd high but the low light never comes on and in never feels like its in low. So at least I could get around in 4wd but something is not right. I just drove around with the switch in 4 low for what I needed. Any ideas? Guess it could be a bad switch?
Im guessing you have ESOF...
When you put it into low did you put it in N with your foot on the brake and then switch to 4low? You should hear a louder thud.
You may have a vacuum leak, bad seals(causing vacuum leak), bad solenoid, bad t/c motor, or bad switch. Those are ranked in order what I would check.
When you switch to 4x4 turn your vent on high and make sure its coming thru the vents. If it changes to defrost when you activate 4x4 then you have a vacuum leak...
Let us know if that happens and we can go from there...
Might just be as simple as to making sure the vacuum lines are attached to the nipple on the hub itself...
I just repaired mine this last week...mine wasnt the simple vacuum leak...it was a vacuum leak caused by a missing o-ring, a bad knuckle seal, and a improperly installed thrust washer....awesome mechanics around here...

Okay I think the part of the problem here was there was short between the drivers seat and the switch. I had forgot that to put in in low the brake had to be on and in neutral. Now both switches seem to work fine. It had been a while since I had to use it, looks like some use did it some good. Thanks for the tips and when the weather clears up a little I will do some closer inspections of the vacuum lines just to be sure .

While you are sitting in the house doing nothing, you could do this. click here. I did this last year and plan to do this every year.
I concur with Rick. Its easy and I wish I wouldve known that before a few weeks ago. In case your hubs are stuck in the auto or lock position Bob (guzzle) told me to get the DuPont teflon spray and spray in the crack. It works like a charm...1st time on mine!
