Fuel problem again!

My 90 superduty, 5spd. Was having fuel cutout problems, So I assumed the fuel tanks were clogged with debris. I dropped the front tank and found the old black plastic screen had broken into pieces, cleaned the fuel tank swiching device and placed a clear line between the IP and line feed? It worked great for 4 tanks, but as soon as I pulled my heavy horse trailer( don't see how this could effect it) the motor would die on the road. I would pull the fuel filter and it would be full, but the clear hose running out of the IP was empty! So I would switch to the rear tank which I have never cleaned yet and gave me hell on my last hauling journey and it would fill the hse and run.... So what can I check next. Could it be the IP? Should I put on a electric fuel pump?( it has a new stock fuel pump) This truck is causing me to drink!

How long since a filter change?

I would also do a pressure and flow test on the lift pump.

I have seen more than one part bad right out of the box.

When you had the tank down, did you inspect the fuel pickup tube?
Did you add a piece of rubber fuel line to extend the hose to the bottom of the tank?
Did you cut a V in the end of the line?

Pulling the horse trailer, you are using more fuel.
So any weak fuel sytem parts will show up then.

And the truck may even drive normal with no trailer or load.

Several new fuel filters. I did not put a piece of hose on the end, just left it with the tube? Pressure and flow do you mean the mech. fuel pump?

You should have extended the tube with a hose with a fishmouth.....< at the end so as not to suction to the tank bottom.

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.
