The E4OD does a good job between 1 and 2 gear, and between 3 and 4 gear, however the problem occurs between 2 and 3 gear. This began happening when the speedometer went to zero and stayed there. Of course, the odometer is at 207322 and holding. In order to go from gear 2 to gear 3 I must shift it (most of the time) on the column. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.
The E4OD needs the signal from the speedometer to shift correctly. I think the speedo sensor for the 93's is located on top of the rear end housing. That is where I would start. Fix the speedo and see if that fixes your shifting problem.

Thank you for the input. I did have a part replaced that went into the rear housing. The part was electronic, small, plastic, "L"-shaped... I think we are speaking about the same part. Had it replaced, and it did not fix the problem. I do have a tac and it does work.
negative. the truck has been off since this morning (6 hours). i have a suspicion that the problem is electronic. i will check the fluid after i run it home. the smell and color both appear to be good. the level is impossible to know with it cold, as you know.
The E4OD is definitely electronic shift. Since you said the shift problem occured at the same time as the speedo quit I would bet if you find the problem with the speedo and fix that the shift problem will go away. Is you truck 4WD? On my 90 model F350 the speedo sensor is on the transfer case. Check to see if your truck has a speed sensor on the trans or transfer case. I'm not sure when they changed them to the rear axle. When I had problems with mine I went to Oriley's and the parts man sold me the sensor for the rear axle and it didn't help. After more checking I found out it was on the trans case. You can't always depend on the parts guys to get it right.

Right again. I believe the speed sensor should be on the trans. You have got to get that working.
Since according to your signature your truck is a 93' it definetely should have the combined ABS/Speedo sending unit in the rear axle. Some of the 89'-91' trucks had independent ABS and Speedo sensors.
Generally, if you got a digital tachometer then your sensor should be in the rear axle.
My 91' F350 has the speedo sensor with the still manual tach cable in the tail of the transfer case and has a separate ABS sender in the rear axle. My dash has a mechanical tachometer.
Since both your digital tachometer and speedometer don't seem to work properly 100% of the time, this will cause problems with shifting on the E4OD as the controller is not getting the proper speed signal for shifting. If you run a code scan on your tranny controller you should get a Code indicating a defective VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). Don't quote me, I think the code is a "Code 49"
The new sending ABS/Speedo sending units are quit cheap (~$30 aftermarket, $50-$70 from Ford).
Watch for iron fillings when you pull the sender unit from the axle. Since it is magnetic it tends to build up metal that came off your gears in your differential. If the build-up is really bad you should change your differential oil as well as the new sender would collect filings and stop working in short order.
I have a 93 4x4 and the vehicle speed/ABS sensor is in the rear differential. There is a possibility that the speedo itself has gone south. First thing I would try, is resetting the PCM and see if the problem comes back. I don't remember exactly which maxi-fuses they are, but if you pull all 4 of the 20 AMP(yellow) Maxi-fuses from the power distribution box, you will get the right 2 of them. Leave the fuses out for about an hour and then reinstall them. Go for a drive and see if the problem is still there, or if it comes back.
There is a fuse under your dash for the speedo, if it is blown the transmission won't shift correctly. I would also pull the connector on the passenger side of the tranny behind the heat shield and make sure that is clean. Fuse is #8 or 2nd one from left on top row
