i was reading a tread on putting a clark 285v in a truck to replace the 4 speed.you have to use a FT bell.Well i was under the impression that the fifth gear would help on the highway on the RPM's.the 5th gear is 1 to 1 ratio,i was talking to a fella that said the four speed is also 1 to 1.is that correct? if so it would'nt change anything wright? I have a 68 F350 with a tool body on the back ,i'm using it as a main work truck for my buisness.i'm currently rebuiding a Z code 390 out of a 66 t-bird 4 barrel.everything will be stock of the engine exept the cam,and the heads witch are d2teaa heads, that i ginded down the hump in the exaust and polished .and then some headers and a 600 cfm holley.i would like to cruise about 70 on the highway, and still have a tough drivetrain,it will always have a good amount of weight on it.and i would like to thank you all for all the great knollege on here it helped out tremendesly.
i relize that , i'm just asking is the 4 speed that comes in the 68 f350 a 1 to 1 ratio?i'm just trying to confirm what the man said.i beleive there was two different 4 speeds for that truck if yall need a # i'll find it and post it.
Another way to go here is the NV4500. Not cheap or free, not priced at scrap metal rates like a Clark from a burned out wreck.
This site had the conversion info, parts and the trans if you want, but you can probably get a trans elsewhere. With what you are doing already, this might could be childs play for you:
there are two easy ways to go both require some cash however. you could use a gearvendors unit which is basiclly a gear splitter that gives a 27% (??) overdrive. The other easy way is an nv4500 conversion. if you email the guys at high impact transmission they will get back with you pretty quickly and let you know exactly what you need to do the conversion. The thing to remember with the gearvendors unit is you can use it between every gear. I dont know how you load down your work truck or if you climb many hills but i know there are lots of times when one gear is way to short and the gear under is way to tall.
from what i read the clark od and the nv4500 are about the same ratios on the gears, and supposabley they kind of rob some performance.i still wana have a little fun somtimes.i will look into all the options yall gave me thank you.i kind of like finding stuff in the junk yard and stuff like that to make it work instead of buying expensive upgrades, but somtimes ya have to pay for what you want.
