But, rupejosh- if you got a 2 1/2" V-band flange, and then stepped the pipe up to 3" after the flange, you could attach it to your factory elbow with the factory clamp and have a larger downpipe. It'd be better than the stocker at least, but not as good as having a 3" elbow too.
I've got access to a mill and about what ever i need. If i machined a piece of flat steel and made it to the bolt pattern i could put a 3" downpipe. The only problem is i would loose my wastegate. There's no way to weld that cast that i know of. How do u think the factory turbo would do without the wastegate. Would it overspool easily?
You CAN weld cast iron you just have to use welding rod for cast iron...
My father in law welded the exhaust manifold on my '87 Chevy Blazer and it lasted 5years that I know of...
The other Dean is correct, heat it with a torch until it makes spit "dance" if the spit hits it and immediatly boils off, its too hot, but if the spit just sticks and fizzles its too cold.
Sorry, I know its the most technical info, but thats just how I learned to weld cast.
I learned how to weld by listening for eggs frying so i know what u mean.
So my next question is any one have an old eldow. I wanna try to modify it to 3 inch. If i can weld to that cast i wont have to machine a new piece and can still keep my wastegate which would be a good thing.
I found a site with the elbow breakdown it looks like the waste gate is just a flap style valve. If i cut it off right were it begins to narrow and opened up the flow as much as possible and welded on a 3" pipe from there on how do think it would perform or would it just mess up the turbo?
If your welding to cast you better be useing a good nickel wire or rod. Also not a bad idea to pean after welding till it cools, the weld material will cool faster than the cast causing it to crack. (20 years welding fabbing for a living, both grand dads were and my dad is still at it )
