has anyone ever heard of a 490ci . my dad says he had one in a 72 f350 2wd work truck. apparently the motor came out of a bus but im having a had time finding anything this motor. does this motor exist or is my dad tripping
he got it.it was probably a 390 in those years.i made a 490 with a stroked 460
Would you mind shairing any detail on that 490 build.
I'll soon be building a replacement engine for the ol house car & thinking about a stroker of some type, not a hot rod, but just a good solid puller engine that can tote the load.
Neil
sorry dont get in here much.well started with 4.440 bore and stroked it .100 to 3.95.used ross racing pistons 426 aluminum hemi rods from a friends top alcohol dragster.its not a cheap motor but its still running today in a friends car and i built it in 97.what do you intend to do with it would determine on what all you need as far as coppression and cam we had 12.5 ot 1 with solid roller and set of ported CJ heads

lock .yes the 490 has a different block and stroke you cannot make a 460 into a true 490,everything from a 460 will bolt onto a 490 block but will not work it will suck air around the heads and intake.
I have a 1990 Georgia boy camper, the truck frame is made to john deere spec,s by Ford. I had a in frame over haul done in 2022 I put 350 miles on it since, I put a new carb and ignition in and it has plenty of power to fly my 30'camper ! I would sell if money is rite amount,we had a house fire and I bought the camper to house help but couldn't find help.
Years ago PAW (Performance Automotive Warehouse-think of it as an older Summit Racing) used to advertise a Ford 490 "Gorilla" crate style of engine based on a Ford 460, like almost 40 years ago. A person I knew bought one and installed in his late 60's stepside Ford pickup, never personally seen it run though.

I remember drooling over all the stuff in those catalogs from Jr. High through graduation.

...once upon a time, longer ago than I care to think....we used to run a '64 Galaxie with a 390 on the clay track in Mansfield Ohio... One day while combing the scrap yard for a back-up engine, we came across an old State Troopers car with an engine everybody says doesn't exist. The tags on the car said it was a "490 Interceptor"...the numbers on the block said it was a 490 cu/in... the decals on the air cleaner and valve covers said 490 Interceptor...the rebuild parts we bought were for a 490 Interceptor.........yet everybody...everywhere...says there was no such thing.........
If ever you might find corroborating evidence of its existence, please pass it along...there's a few knuckleheads that need smacked upside the noggin with it............

"Old" state troopers car, as in what year range? What make and model car? Where did you order the reman parts from? Can you find the same car and engine in a photo online? Have you seen one in a car museum or anywhere since?

Seeing as though the ONLY evidence of a factory Ford "490" in a browser search (pick yer poison on that one) is THIS THREAD.
