I have been having this problem for a little while now. When I start the truck for the first time in the day the rpm's jump from almost stall to normal idle. It doesn't matter if it is warm or cold (although gets way worse in the cold - block heater helps). If I keep my foot on the pedal slightly it goes away. I can start it again 5 hours later and starts like a dream. Wait to start light stays on for about 10 secs. regardless of outside temperature. Glow plug relay and glow plugs (read with volt meter 0.6 ohms each) both seem to be good.
Thats the only cure the oil is just so thick to flow though the HPOP, oil rails, injectors its just really a mess since these trucks are powered by the HEUI system that runs off of oil.
Is there a cure for the romps without the expense of synthetic oil? Does anyone know what causes the romps?
You can try to find a lighter weight dino oil that has better cold flow properties, but you have to make sure it's diesel rated and has the proper anti-foaming additives. The down side to this is you need to change it as soon as the weather warms back up, regardless of the mileage on the oil. The synthetic can be run year around, so you don't have to worry about the temps. There's nothing wrong with running synthetic in the winter and regular dino oil in the summer.
