4x4 lube

My dealer gave me a recommended service frequency brochure on which it is written:
4x4 "Lubricate transfer case shift lever pivot bolt and control rod connecting pins every 20,00km (12,000 miles)"

Can anyone tell me where these are exactly, and what to lube them with?
Are they exposed and easily accessible, or is there any disassembly required?
A picture would be helpful.

I sometimes go to an aftermarket corner oil change service, and am not sure they would know how unless explicitly told what to do.

Is it reasonable to ask them to do this as part of their lube-oil-filter service, given that there is nothing else to lube on an F150, or is it more difficult and worthy of an extra fee?? Comments appreciated.

do you have the manual shifter?

that is talking about the linkage from the shifter to the t-case

I have the electric rotary switch on the dash, so does this service not apply in my case?

yes, it does not apply.

the only maintenance the t-case you have requires is a fluid change at every 60,000 miles if you meet the "Special" Operating conditions. otherwise, I beleive the manual says 150,000 miles with normal driving

as a good CYA item, I suggest you put the truck into 4x4 at least 1-2 times a month. the electric shifter motor can sometimes get water into it and corrode. the shifting will help prevent the corrosion from building up

ok, it has always worked fine and I have never serviced it so just use it and if it aint broke dont fix it ? I always wondered why the dealer has an expensive 4x4 service on their board in the service lobby, and if there was something I could/should be doing on my own instead.

there are some things that a vehicle really needs maintenance wise.

1. plugs
2. oil
3. filters

and there are alot of other fluff that the dealer makes huge $$$ off of. That lube you are asking about is stupid simple. You remove the pin, clean it, inspect it, lightly regrease, re-install.

How much did they want? $30+ I'll bet.

they wanted to sell me "4x4 service" for $200....so what would they have done in the case where there is an electric switch and no manual lever to grease?

most likely they would have changed the fluid in the t-case, inspected your front/rear driveshaft u-joints and then pocketed $100+

maybe check the IWE for proper operation

ok, so the brochure says 100,000km (60,000 mi) for the first 4x4 t-case service...

For a vehicle that is not used for "real" work (just back&forth to office) and tows a boat a dozen or so times in Summer, and goes Canada-Florida-Canada once a year, is this about right or should I do it sooner?

I just did the first transmission oil/filter change at 65,000km (35000 mi) and am wondering when to do the transfer case and rear diff fluids?

I would just follow the light service interval. Your truck has alot of heavy duty components that aren't being overly taxed. Do it if you need the peace of mind though.

60,000 miles sounds okay to me

Something I would like to add is this.

If you rarely ever use 4 wheel drive, occasionally just put it in 4x4 hi and drive a little ways, and then go back to 2 hi.

Try to not do this when you will be doing much for sharp turns, as its hard on it.
But its good to keep everything moving in there sometimes.

In summer I may not need 4 wheel drive for months and months, so a couple times a summer I just go into 4x4 when say driving down the road in no rush, and do this for say 1 or 2 minutes, then back to 2 hi.

thanks for the tip; my 4x4 gets used regularly in winter on a driveway with snowy incline, and occasionally in Summer on slippery boat ramps; will remember to exercise it monthly.
