Return fuel line problems.
My 90 F350 4x4 NA is in serious need of a rebuild of the return fuel lines. The PO changed the lines at some point but didn't change the plastic caps. I ordered a complete kit for it but I have a couple questions before I install it.
1. Do I need to pull the injectors and change the copper washers that came with the kit just to do the fuel lines? The engine runs great with very little smoke on start up that clears almost immediately so I don't think it has any injector problems.
2. Upon inspection before tear down I noticed someone has placed flat washers under the hard line nut on top of the plastic cap in an attempt to stop the plastic cap from leaking on 2 of the injectors. What other damage should I be looking for?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
No need to replace the copper wahers, what you have is an injector install kit.
Save them for a later date.
Flat washers need to be gone.
Take you time, make sure you lubricate the O rings and caps before you install the caps.
Also when you move the injection lines out of the way, try not to bend them.
Then install it as one piece.
Never change one or two injectors, you will be chasing leaks forever.
Also after you change it, try to not disturb the return lines.
Don't take long with hot fuel going through the return lines and the O rings will not reseal if disturbed.
If that happens, you get to do the O rings again.
