who is running spartan tunes with the dpf still on? i am thinking about buying a spartan and didn't want to take all the dpf stuff off yet. i only have 1K miles on my truck. which one are you running? does the cleaning cycle come on more often? did your milage get better? thanks
I'm running the DPF on tunes. Currently running the 150hp tune. I like it. MPG's are just a bit better, but there's more power, & the shifting is different. Better oomph all around. It had no effect on my regen process, so that's good news. I am also using the AFE CIA & MBRP exhaust. If I was to do it all over, I'd probably go with the S&B or Banks intakes. The AFE throws the P2002 code. No real issue w/ that. No drivability issues. Just a nusance. I hope this helps.
gambling209, R-T0r21on's description of our on-road tuning is on par with most other user feedback we've had in the past.
Don't expect miracles with it in the mileage department with the DPF installed, but most do see improvements. Power and drivability will certainly be improved.
The kit can also be upgraded later to off-road tuning, if you choose to do so, for very low cost.
Can someone explain in detail how to install the Spartan tunes with DPF delete? Technically about the only thing I know how to do on a truck is fill it with diesel and change the oil and filter. If I were to purchase, who could install it assuming I can't? Can any old service station do the work if they are OK knowing it voids warranty? How long does an install take? Are there any directions out there that explain the process? I've got a Job 1 with 9500 trouble free miles and I'm tempted to dump the DPF if I can figure out the install process. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
i'll take a wack at this. climb under your truck. that big thing in your exhaust infront of your muffler is the dpf. the thing infront of that is the cat. you buy a pipe that replaces one or both, your choice. take the one to three sensors, bepending on how much you replace, off your old stuff and transfer. i would say no station would do it for you. it is against the law. here where i live, you could fail inspection. installing the tunes is a plug and play thing. look at any diesel mag. they usually do and article on those often. it plugs in the port under you steering wheel. thanks for the info matt, i'll be calling soon.
You can go over to Spartan's forum and see a lot of other input. Fairly simple - hardest part for me was just getting the stock exhaust out from underneath the truck! All in all about 2 hours of work for me, and I am by no means a mechanic.
DPF REMOVAL AND DELETE PIPE INSTALLATION
Ensure that you let exhaust system cool before starting!
Disconnect sensors on DPF. If you are removing the CAT as well, disconnect sensors on CAT.
Using a quality 13mm Line Wrench, remove sensors, taking care not to round-off/bend/break sensors. Applying a penetrating agent such as Liquid Wrench or PB Blast is recommended prior to removal of sensors. It may be necessary to heat sensors and surrounding areas to facilitate removal (NuttyProfessor @ Spartan advises to BE CAREFUL when using heat to assist with removal).
Use a 15mm wrench to loosen/disconnect the DPF-back exhaust. Wrap a ratchet-strap around the exhaust and over the axle, using the ratchet to assist in pulling the exhaust out of the DPF (if no ratchet strap is available, a block of wood and hammer/mallet should suffice). Set aside exhaust (it is recommended that the OEM Ford exhaust be retained in the event the vehicle needs to be returned to full stock).
Use a 15mm wrench to remove the hardware connecting the DPF to the CAT. It is also necessary to remove the 13mm bolts attaching the DPF hangar to the frame rail. Remove DPF and hangar in one piece.
**If you are removing the CAT, use a 13mm wrench to remove the bolts at the ball flange. It is also necessary to remove the 13mm bolts attaching the CAT hangar to the frame rail. Remove CAT and hangar in one piece.
Install DPF Delete or DPF/CAT Delete or downpipe-back exhaust.
Install sensors and reconnect wiring harnesses. Ensure that you re-install the vacuum line located towards the front (engine-side) of the DPF delete.
Ensure that all sensors and installed and reconnected prior to starting your truck! DO NOT start your truck with the sensors un-installed/unplugged.
So I did it today, ordered the complete Spartan set up. I sat here saying, self do you need that? self do you need to spend money on anymore toys?, self do you want that system? self wont it be sick when your smoking ricers with a 3/4 pickup? haha OF COURSE. The lady on the phone was very nice to talk to and answer any questions I had. They are running a pretty decent deal for the system too, I have priced it out every which way and right through them is turning out to be the best. I cant waite to play!
