The early 700r4 trannys made the E40D trannys look bomb proof and towing in OD was a big no no.I knew one guy that got exactly 60 miles out of his tranny in his brand new pickup that he bought to go on vacation with his travel trailer. When I was running my shop and I replaced overdrive auto's pullinh uhauls constantly. The people always said Uhaul said I could.

I replaced lots of the early ford overdrives too, OD was good for business at least ford put an od lockout button on them, but some folks thout they were for decoration I guess.
I don't think the driver should be blamed if it is holding OD and not hunting for gears.
If you buy an automatic trany then it should take care of that itself.
I only use the button if its shifting in and out of OD too much.
You are right but they weren't built to pull loads in od or in the mountains. autos by nature build heat and the harder you use one the more heat it builds. When I am on the road I will push 1,000 miles a day so I don't use an auto very much as they just aree not designed for my use. I however don't use a pickup real hard much any more but when I do I still like my standards and diesels.
Thats a little over 14 hours a day at 70 MPH, thats a long time to be in a truck!
I would much rather have a standard than an auto too, but my 4R100 is still holding on at 170,000 miles. I am really glad the IDI has a 5 speed, I would not have gotten it if it was an auto.
Now as far as the diesels go, I like my IDI but I love the V10.lol
Speed limit is 75 in the western states 70 in most others, nearly anywhere you can get by at 5 over. But since fuel prices got so bad I keep it at 65 and just keep the drivers door closed an hour or two more. If I am in the pickup I can just roll. In the truck I can log 11 hours which is over 700 miles then off 10 then 11 more so sometimes you have to be creative. In canada I can log 13 and yukon and alaska 15 but the speed limits are lower. It is getting harder depending on how you pay for fuel and a few other things.
10 hours and then 6 off over here. A fair bit of creative accounting seems to go on though. Satellite tracking is putting an end to a lot of that but. My dads mate says the company rings him if the truck does more than 5km/h over the limit for more than 10 minutes.
Igot to work this morning and showed a dodge loving buddy of mine that vid. He about died laughing then wanted to cry because of the dodge carnage lol.
LOL!! I think that if I hit a neon I might not even notice. But then again it was a dodge on dodge and I gues the neon was a little tougher than most people think. Sorry DOdge if you read this but those things just can't beat a Ford lol.
