Ok, so my 97 ins a crew cab. Has two dome lights. both of which have two sitches on either side. Problem one...the dome light comes on Only when the passenger door is opened OR when you turn it on via headlight switch. I replaced the jamb switch on the drivers door, it did nothing. Problem two...the switches on either side of the dome lights do not work. I took them apart and cleaned the contacts but it didnt help. I'm stumped
bmx, I read this last night and drew a blank. The first thing I would do is take the lights completly out including their bases. Look at how the wires feed them. Take them out and make a wire or two to feed it while standing next to a batterie. Test the lights like that. If they work, your problem is in the cab somewhere. And the only way to find your short is to isolate the wires and ohm them out. But just as a wild azz guess, I would check under your drivers side rocker panel. The black plate at the bottom of the door that has 5 screws in it. Pull that up and get to the wiring. Make sure a wire hasn't caught a screw. Then make sure you are getting 12v to the door switches. Hell, I don't even know if those trip power or ground. But I'd stick a test light on it to see. And that my friend is the best I can tell you right now. You gotta start looking at your wiring to the lights. And most of the time it's hidden in the pillars. If you can find the start and end of the wires and pull them back and fourth, I would attach new wire to one end and pull new wires in the headliner. Then you know those are good. Then everything else is just a matter of finding them under the dash and kick panels. I hope that helps some.
IIRC there are two wires going to the dome lights one from the door switches that turns it on when you open the doors, The other is a constant hot for turning the light on manually with the switches on the light. It is self grounding with one of the mounting screws. Im not 100% on this info, I'll have to look in the morning to verify this. Since you are having problems with both the door switches and the switches on the lights, Im with RubberDuck on this one. Probably bad wiring somewhere. Best thing is just methodically work thru it till you figure out the problem. I know thats much help, sorry.
