Ford 5.8 Power

I have a 1996 Ford F-250, with a 5.8 and automatic transmission. Lately ive been wishing for more power. So far the truck is stock, and id like to do an exhaust. But what else is there to do? I have been reading up on here and it seems like a cam is one of the top choices. Could anyone provide some information on that for me? And also, I noticed that NOS makes a Nitrous kit for Ford Trucks. Thats probly not the best thing to get, but does anyone have experience with that kit?

I've been told full length headers into a good 3" single exhaust is a great thing to do.

Also, bumping the timing will get you a little something. Heads, cam, it's all here somewhere.

I won't get that far into mine until I do a full rebuild and then it will be a stroker. Assuming it's still around.

Yep... do the exhaust first and then get a cam, something like the Comp XE264HR will stretch the stock injectors for all they're worth, really wakes up the motor.

Would different injectors allow me to run a more high performance cam that would give me more power?

Question is, how much horsepower do the stock injectors support?

No, the stock heads and intake only flow enough for about 275-285hp, and that's about what the stock injectors can supply.

So if I were to get Edlebrock Cylinder heads, and Intake manifold. I could run a more agressive cam, giving me much more power?

Yes.... but then you also need bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump/s, a MAF conversion, and a tuner. $$$

Alright, but without all that, I can get around 280hp out of my truck?

If I were to do a full exhaust, then install a new cam. Could I also run a Powerdyne Supercharger kit with no other mods? What kind of power could I expect with a setup like that?

A supercharger changes the rules, you should also get an FMU if you buy a kit, that increases fuel pressure at the injectors and that's how the motor gets more fuel for the extra air. A supercharger could add another 50-100hp depending how much boost you run, and it will do that without any other engine mods except for an ignition box to retard timing when detonation is sensed and an upgraded fuel pump. Without forged pistons you won't be able to run more than about 5-6psi boost but that will still produce lots more power.

On the Powerdyne website it says the kit comes with an FMU. So basically, im looking at installing a full exhaust, comp cam, and powerdyne supercharger kit.

I could run that setup without new injectors? What kind of power can I expect with these mods? Will the transmission hold up to this power, or is there anything I can buy that would be beneficial? Also, my truck is a 1996 F-250 with the 5.8. Doesnt it come with Mass Air?

That's a good question, I shift kit would certainly be good insurance.

Not unless it's a California model or it's under 8500lb GVWR.
