welcome to FTE!

the first year for an F350 4x4 was 1979.

no such thing as an F350 Highboy.

all Highboy were 1973-1977 F250s (before serial # Y20,001) 4x4s. some even call the 1967-1972 F250 4x4s Highboys, too. the orignal Highboys were 1928-1932 hot rods without the steps on them, thus making them look like they sat higher.

the years for the 351M/400 in trucks were 1977-1979.

your truck is pieced together and is something that you think it is.

Ok, this truck is not yet in my possesion and from all the dead ends I was starting to figure out that it was not what i had come to believe it was. its a 1974 but has F350 badges on it. My knowledge of these particular trucks is very limited but if it is a 400 in a 74 truck would these headers clear? I'm mpre then likely going to oreder them and try them eitherway. thank you for the insight on the truck.

Welcome to FTE.

Once you get it home then you can start working out just what it is. Start with the door tag. There are links here on this site that will help you decode the vin number. Look for other tags on the truck too. I had one on the front cross member of the bed, dead center, underneath. I have another tag located on the bulkhead right behind the engine with numbers and codes on it. The frame will also have a vin number stamped into it on the right forward rail, on top, at about where the front of the cab turns up. That one is hard to find and see unless the front fender and inner fender are removed and wire wheel is applied generously.

check the stroke of the engine to make sure it's a 390. no 390s came in 4x4s.

360 = 3.50"
390 = 3.78"

post your VIN number and Warranty Plate and that will give you some more info about your truck.

make sure that you change the gaskets, too. my buddy put headers on his 01 F150 and he put the original manifold gaskets back on. now he has this huge exhaust leak. if you ask him about it he just says that gaskets are too expensive, but he's still looking for some. if it was me I woulda had the new gaskets on there the first week if I had gotten a leak, but first I wouldn't have put the same gaskets back on.

My current headers have the ball and socket type. Much better imo because it won't blow out like the gaskets do.

On headers it is really easy if you can weld and have a shop near you that you can get parts off....Yes I know it is easier said than done. But if you buy off the shelf headers and except to just bolt them on with the engine in the truck, please expected to run into some problems. I made my own flanges at work for my 360. That way both sides only had 2 exhaust ports per flange, thus giving me 4 flanges. That way I only have to snake 2 pipes at once. Then I got some scrap pipe of a local Muffler Brothers they charged me by the pound and I walked out with more pipe than I ever would need. I got my collectors off Jegs along with the head to gasket material. Then spot welded everything up and removed so I could fully weld it. Then wrapped all of it up and bolted them on.

I then sold the engine to a buddy for his 74 F150 when I dropped a rebuilt engine in my 76 F250.

On a side note check with local shops on some custom headers...They might be alot cheaper than you think they will be and right now some of these shops might need more work coming in.
