I bought my daughter a 2001 Focus last fall, new driver, first car..... she rear ended a SUV about a month ago and damaged the hood and right front fender, I've replaced parts and have the car ready to paint.
Years ago I worked in a body shop and painted lots of cars, but I haven't painted in almost twenty years, products and paints have sure changed alot..... I'm thinking about buying a cheap gun from Harbor Frieght and painting it myself, any suggestions on gun and paint??
I have a Kobalt gun from Lowes that works decent, but I still prefer the Binks guns. As far as paint goes, it all depends on what you are looking for or are going to do (Base coat clear, enamel, laquer) Most paint shops have a wide range of paints to choose from as far as manuf. I like PPG for base, but I like using Transtar clear because its cheaper for one, and I like the way it sprays (little orange peel). I think now you can go lots of places and pick up Duplicolor real cheap, then just clear over it. Keystone automotive has their own line of paints. Some work good, some require a few more coats to cover the primer (depends on the color)
You can get an aftermarket Binks or sharpe for about $50.00. It should work well enough. Unless you have a solid color a two stage paint will be best so that you can blend the opposite fender. The base is similar to spraying lacquer while the clear is similar to spraying enamel in the old days.(Be careful for runs) As Chaosracing said Transtar is a good cheap clear, I prefer Glasso but just about any paint will do.
