5.4 problems

I have a 98 f-150 with the 5.4 engine, has 160,000 miles on it...i have a few issues with it, first is the truck spits and sputters any time you give it fuel, at idle the truck runs fine. It also will go no higher than around 3,200 rpm before trying to stall out.Ok heres the wierd part....if i put a 6 volt battery in the truck it runs like the day it came off the lot. Ive replaced all plugs fuel filter and air and kept the maintenece up on it good...Can someone please give me an idea of where to go from here..Thanks

I must say Ive never heard of putting a 6 volt batt in a 12 volt system...anyway, first id check to see if any codes are stored. does the CEL light work?If its running that bad,it should be popping a code or two.... How long have the 02 sensors been in the truck?

Even with a 6 volt battery your alt. is still powering the truck when it's running and the voltage is around 12.

I have no idea why my dad put a 6 volt battery in the truck to begin with but it does run great....running is all it will do, instrument cluster or anything electrical doesnt work but anyways i did scan for codes and the CEL does work...the code said...fuel system too lean bank 2. I assume that would be a o2 sensor? The truck has had o2 sensors replaced in the past.

My 2003 F-150 with the 5.4 engine did the same thing. I read all the posts about what it could be. After replacing the Coil on Plug(s) (Cyl.#2 misfire code) - Adding water remover to the fuel, and replacing the fuel filter.....it still misfired like yours does.I took it into a shop, and they discovered WATER had got into the plug hole recesses, and caused the plugs to start shorting out. He blew out the water, and now it runs fine. Look for water in the plug holes. Apparently water can migrate on and over the coil on plugs and make it's way to the plug holes. It enters from the rear of the engine by the wiper blades. Good luck! Robin
