might get flamed for this but i would strongly discourage the 6.0 if you plan on using your truck in cold climates like below -10F. I know gelling is inherent to all diesels but i run the same additive as everyone else and my truck consistently blows injectors at this temp.
That's sort of strange since there must be hundreds of thousands of 6.0 up north which run every day. Maybe the tech is giving you a line!
Ive probably ran my truck in -36f for probably 2 weeks worth of days and -10f for most of two winters and never had a gelling or injector problem. I do put it in the garage when it is colder than -22f and the block heater gets pluged in at 32f.
2007 6.0l with 64000 miles no problems whatsoever and all i do for addatives it the ford stuff about every 3 tanks just because i idle alot ( 5200 hours on the clock right now ).
04 PSD with 54K on ticker put 10K on my self no powertrain issues I am aware of Engine wise. Live in Salt Lake and the average here in the winter is 0 - 36 Degree's starts no issue. We head up to the Uinta's here to ride and the temp up thier can get down to -10and still starts no issue with one cycle of glow plugs. Tad of white blow off for a sec. but no issue and too be expected. Planning on block heater though for ease...
06' F-350 six-O, S-cab, 4x4, s-bed, here,,,40k plus miles,,no issues at all, push a 9' Fisher,,tow 4 different trailers,,thing pulls like a 20 legged mule,,all stock approx. 1300 hrs(will have to check that),,,Break your truck in,,,and then DO NOT BABY IT!
Put your foot into it after its warmed up,,, atleast once each time you drive it, get that Boost up (mine is almost 30 psi stock)to excersize those turbo vanes,,keeps them nice and free, is my thinking,,this engine is a worker,,dont let it sit around,,and it should treat you well.
yeah i'm not trying to be anti-6.0. i would love to love mine. just giving you my personal experience. lots of people i have run into in western wyoming have had a bad experience with their 6.0. for the record mine has 90k on it and had injector issues 4 seperate times. my dads 7.3 on the other hand has never had motor problems at 190k. i usually plug in but it fires right up either way. its about twenty miles down the road that it always has problems.
23K, 38K miles would not give me the warm and fuzzys, we need to hear 223K and 238K trouble free miles from a PSD, remember this is a diesel, can anyone say they have over 200K trouble free miles? i just think its funny to call out 23K trouble free miles
I know a diesel tech that is a friend off mine that has worked on lots off these motors. He told me to be religious about changing that fuel filter. Its more restrictive then the old 7.3s an should be changed real regular. he told me every oil change. More then likly you will never have an injector go out. A utility company has followed this religiously an never had a problem.
