Anyone know where to get a heater control valve? local NAPA owner said he looked for one for a chevy. and no luck. I can do the manual shut off at the engine but would like to keep the cable operation. It is a 49,
I bought a rather generic heater control valve for about $20 or so.....check RockAuto's parts site and you can look at pictures to find one that looks like it'll work.
For example, Here's what I found for a '65 Ford F-250 at Rock Auto
you can look at several and get the one that best matches what you want to do. The valve above is listed at about $13 and you can probably buy it locally.......

Sure, there's a couple places that sell them. I think Mid fifties has one - but they list it for a later model. C&G has a couple NOs but they are expensive.
There was a discussion about these about a month ago as well. It had quite a bit of good info in it.
A number of years ago I bought one for a later model Ford pickup at either a NAPA or CarQuest store and put it on. I never bothered to hook up a control to it and basically leave it closed in warm seasons and open it in the Fall. It could be hooked up to a cable to operate from inside the cab, but I just put it in the heater hose under the hood.

Bills pointing out an important point that I glossed over but am going to expand on a touch.
The original 53-56 NOS valves (if you are doing a 100% original resto) are available (but VERY limited) and run $160. There are later model valves, which are functionally the same from later models that are avaialble in many places.
Just make sure when you look at them to ask if they are cable operated (so you can open and close it while driving) or a simple gate valve that you have to raise the hood to shut on and off by hand.
The links I posted above have pictures and places to buy as well.
