I have a '78 F150 4*4 with a 351M. I live in an area with no emmision inspections. The current exaust which was there when I got the truck has no cats. The engine emission sticker says non-catalyst. Did this engine come from an earlier truck or is this a non catalyst truck. I am planning on putting duals under it and I need to know. If it truely is non catalyst there is a great muffler shop in town that does a beautiful job. Otherwise I gotta crawl under it and do it. I hate doing exaust. Secondly how are people routing it. I want to dump before the wheels cause anything after runs a good chance of getting ripped off. Can I just run the exaust back on the right side and then dump down in front of the axle or do I have to (legally) plumb it out the side? Sorry for the long post and thanks for your input.
An easy way to check for catalyst is look at the fuel guage. If it says "Unleaded Fuel Only" then it should have had a cat on it. Exhaust laws differ from state to state. Check with your local agency or exhaust shop. Any muffler shop should be able to make up a good system for you. Don't use anything smaller than 2 1/4" tubing. I would use 2 1/2" if the shop uses a ram type bender. Install a crossover pipe if there is room.
I don't think you'd have to run it out the side, but I would just for safety sake. (IE a myriad of noxious gases would abound, unless you like that sort of thing )
