I'm lookig to purchase a pretty clean 1979 f-150 with a 460/auto, 2x4. I will be going by to check it out and drive it soon, and I was wondering if there were any common problems in these trucks that I should look out for. Power steering, suspension, tranny, etc?

I don't have as much experiance as some of the other members here, but I have owned a couple of '79's. The only problem I have ever had with any of my trucks has been electrical issues. These trucks aren't to complex so solving the problem on your own shouldn't be to much of a problem. I am trying to figure one out right now and its just a matter of tracing wires and testing components. I would look for lights in the dash staying on. Just my two cents.
Thanks for the response! I've had a few pre-70's models, and they have been fantastic trucks. Couple of early 90's models that were just junk, and my 2000 SD powerstroke is a solid machine, except the notorious wheel bearing and tranny issues. Otherwise, I'm a ford man through and through. Cant wait to get my hands on the big block!
One of the most important things is rust. The next most important thing is to make sure the tuck is complete; mainly that it is not missing any parts. Also, make sure the truck has not had any fabrications or un-natural repairs as attempts to fix or improve upon OE parts. You do not want a truck that has been wrecked and had the frame straightened and welded back so look over the main structure of the truck thoroughly before buying.
