I own a 2003 F-350 SD, with a 7.3 PS. Intermittently the radio, power windows, and map lights will not work. I have replaced the relay, disconnected the radio, and checked the fuses. Nothing seems to help except slapping the dash above the radio, I hate having to do that. Does anyone else have this problem? If so what have you tried, and if you have an idea of what it could be please share.
Thank you, Ryan
Sounds like you could have a problem with your GEM (generic electronic module).
A few guys here have had these problems when the GEM has been exposed to moisture due to a bad windshield seal or just a bad module. Check to see if you have a small leak or water getting down in the front of the cab that may be causing the problem. I think it is located under the dash near the firewall (possibly on the back of the fuse box) but I am not sure of this. No idea what a part like this would cost.
Did your problem start after a rain or washing your truck? Just trying to see if it is similar to others who have had problems with their GEM getting wet due to a bad window seal.
Check this link for some more info and you may want to do a search on GEM to see if you can find more info.
Thank you for your input, I have not noticed a difference between wet weather or dry. I do notice that after I wash my truck, the issue seems to be worse. I will go a check to see if there is any indication of moisture. I do appreciate your response.
Thank you again, Ryan
I had the exact same problem with my 2001, bought a gem and that wasn't it. Turns out for one reason or another a couple of my fuses were loose in the box under the dash. I ever so slightly bent the tabs of the fuse to put a little more tension on it when installed and wala, everything works as it should.
BTW, anyone need a brand new gem for a 2wd I just happen to have one, wouldn't be surprised if it would sell below what Ford charges for it.
No problem,
I screwed with that thing for better part of a week, I bet I can get that fuse box and gem out faster than a good ford mechanic. I had enough for both of us, I hope it works for you.
I was looking for the power window relay so that I could check it. But I can not find it, I was wondering if you had any ideas. I looked in that engine compartment and did not see a relay/fuse box. Any idea were the window relay is? Or am I just missing it? I really appreciate your help. The owner's manual says the relay is located in slot 602, that slot is not present in the box under the instrument panel and it calls the fuse 30 CB.
Thanks, Ryan
The fuse box in the engine compartment on mine is on the drivers side, the power window relay on mine I believe is in the cab fuse box. There were two, I want to say one was for the windows and the other was for the wipers. I know they changed the box's around from year to year so mine might be totally different than yours. I can look tomorrow if you need me to, right now it's time to hit the sack, good luck.
I did find the circuit breaker I was looking for, apparently 2003 all of the fuses are located under the instrument panel, I just missed it. I have decided that I need to research into the problem to find the solution, any help is welcome.
Thanks so much, Ryan
