Hey guys, I currently own an 1992 F150 4x4 with the 351 Windsor EFI. The truck has 125,000 miles on stock motor/trans.
I have searched the forum and still could not find an answer.
The other day, The truck was touch as nails to start. Once running it would not idle, you would have to hold the throttle. Once driving down the highway, the acceleration was very slow. It would not get up and go. I pulled up to the driveway, and the motor kills itself and refuses to start. my first thought, Fuel Filter. I ran into town, got a filter, and returned home. Turning the key just makes a clicking sound from the passenger side of the motor. The starting solenoid is good, i have checked over and over. The starter was replaced two years ago. I believe the starter might be locked. While under the hood, i have noticed traces of gas in my oil and I have noticed that oil is seeping from around where the crank and oil pan meet . So right now I am looking for any answers or input into these problems. Thank you in advance.
EDIT: No unusual noises appeared. This motor does not even tick. The crank can be spun with a wrench. The motor has perfect compression.
Well, your new starter is either bad out of the box, or you simply have a bad battery. I have a similar problem. The starter completely shorts when cranking sometimes. I have not replaced it yet, as the motor still starts easy most of the time. My truck has the EFI 460, w/ 250,000 miles on it.
Your battery should read 12.0-13.5 volts with the engine and ignition off. Any lower and the battery is probably no good.
As for the hard starting, you may have a sensor issue. The computer could either be way way rich, or too lean. Does it start easier cold, or hot? It could also be a bad fuel pump, or fuel pump relay.
I have no idea which sensor it could be, as I do NOT know much about EFI. My truck has some sort of issue their too. Runs rich, starts easier cold than hot. That has a lot to do with the starter too though. Starter works way better cold than hot. Fuel pump should make noise when the ignition is on. I think it's in the tank, but I'm not sure. Fuel pump relay is on the driver's side by the brake cylinder. It's a bunch of wires with a cap type thing lol. There's a Davidsfarm youtube video that shows it somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.
Fuel in the oil usually means a stuck fuel injector. You've got several problems. Fuel injector cleaner MAY fix it, but most likely you will have to replace the injector. I don't know how to find out which one. It could also be just from the engine running WAY rich too though.
I would suspect the fuel pressure regulator for the starting and running problems. Pull the vacum line and see if gas or strong smell of gas is present. If so, the FPR has failed and is dumping way too much fuel.
Good Luck Frank
First off, thank you all for the fast response. All connections have just been cleaned, the battery is providing the correct voltage. The solonoid tested good. I believe the starter is just acting up, I will take it back and check with them. Fuel pumps are working correctly. Oil in the air box is a sign of a bad PCV valve right? I never thought to check the FPR. When you say pull the line, do you mean the brake booster line to check for the scent of gas?
The vacumn line is attached to the FPR. The FPR is controlled by engine vacum. When the internal diaghram ruptures, full fuel pump pressure is applied to the fuel rail, and some excess gas is sucked thru the rupture and into the intake manifold. The injectors are spraying way too much gas and the air being sucked into the cylinder is already carrying some gas too.
Altogether the mixture is way too rich.

Here is an update on the truck. The starter came back bad, so a new starter made this old 351 start right up. No problems running or starting.
While driving it I noticed the oil pressure gauge is going below low when at a stop sign or just letting off on the highway. It jumps back to normal when throttle is applied. I topped the oil off, it helped for the day but now its doing it again. I only used a quarter of a tank today. I noticed while at the gas station for 15 minutes it had 3 small drops of oil on the ground, each scatterd about an inch from one another in the middle of the front end. Does anyone have an idea where to start?
Update: The whole front end of my truck is covered in oil. I believe it is coming from the end of the cam, its shaking around bad. I think the bearing is out.
