OK, here's my question.....I have a new '02 V-10 Superduty. I know that the intake is restrictive cuz I can see that. To improve that I bought the K&N FIPK. Now to the exhaust. My understanding is that if you improve the intake then you should improve the exhaust to take full advantage of your intake mod. My question is how do I know that the stock muffler won't handle this increase? I was thinking about installing a cat-back (cost factor) and that brings up yet another question....if I add a cat-back is the stock y-pipe and cat too restrictive to allow the increased flow to the cat-back? Jeezzz, that's two questions
I know that a complete system from the headers back is the way to go but it's cost prohibitive for me right now. Any help you guys can provide is much appreciated.

Input and Output
The exhaust is probabally more restrictive than the intake. If you don't want to spring for a cat-back system then just replace the muffler. Some here like the Flowmaster 40. The stock Ford tailpipe is rather free flowing. The cat isn't bad at all. The Y pipe sucks! Headers really are the way to go. I think right now only Banks has kits for the 02's. Borla should have it soon.

i am not too familiar with the 02 v-10 system but i can say that stepping up to a 3" single exhaust from the "Y" greatly helped me out. a cat-back will help but it was not that much ($500 US) to get my system put on. if you can spring the $500 for something similar then you can get your headers and new "Y" later. you do have a single system right? if not forget everything i just said.

I agree with V10man. The Y-pipe is the most restrictive part of the exhaust. You can save a bit a dough over the name brand stuff.
Replace the muffler (like he said) and go to a respectable exhaust shop and ask them to fabricate you a new Y-pipe. Shouldn't cost more than $100 for the pipe. I found a guy about 30 miles from me who has fabbed up a number of V10 Y-pipes with good results. I will be visiting him later this month.
The other parts of the exhaust are surprisingly free-flowing.
