Need help with transmission

My grad adviser needs help with the tranny on his 94 Explorer. First, where is a good place to buy a good transmission? Second, what is the ID for the automatics that came in the 94 (i.e. E40D for my F-Series)? Third, any special tools needed? And finally, does anyone have a good link giving a detailed removal procedure?

Thanks in advance!

94 has the A4LD, make sure the replacement has all the upgrades and has been line bored for the main support bushings.

Flush and Blow out all the cooler lines and install a new/rebuilt torque converter.

The best approach is to have the old one rebuilt at local shop that is knowledgeable about the issues and can properly fix them. Off the shelf transmissions may or may not have these issues resolved. They might have been sitting on a shelf for a long time, and they probably have been pressure tested, but not drive tested. I am all for supporting the little guy and supporting my local businesses.

Having worked at a couple of transmission shops, one was an AAMCO I also have had trans. problems that I've had to do over for various reasons. I would recommend that you buy a Ford Reman unit. The cost for a 4R70 for big Fords is about $1450, exchange or thare is a core charge. The last I heard the Ford Remans had a 36 Mo. or 36000 mile warrantee at any Ford dealer. A warrantee from a local shop may be good but sometimes you have to go through a lot of arguing to make it happen. With Ford they will match your VIN to the correct trans and it will have all of the latest upgrades. Your purchase will be in the Ford Data System and any dealer can retrieve it any where in the US and Canada.

A rebuilt unit, including genuine Ford products all have the same problems. It is the performance and heavy duty upgrades that have been developed that offer the best solutions. Avoid remanufactured units.

It doesn't matter where you get or who does the transmission. You can have problems either way. Don't be dissapointed if you do. All the automatic transmissions nowadays are built very badly, from all car companys period. And even with performance mods, to do it properly would cost some huge amounts of money.
