breaking a weld?

I am trying to reuse a Flowmaster muffler that was welded on. I have cut the pipe in directly up to the flowmaster inlet and outlet, is it possible to remove the section of pipe that was welded on? The only options that I see now are 1) use a grider and try to grind down the piping, thus removing the weld, or, 2) use several adaptors to reduce the overall size from 2 and 5/8 to the 2 1/4 pipe I'm usung for the new exhaust. Any suggestions from anyone?

I'm not sure where exactly you cut the muffler off at but this is what I did to reuse a muffler. My mufflers had a 2-3 inch nipple and the weld was on the end. I'm sure the Flowmaster is the same. I cut through both pipes just behind the weld leaving enough nipple to use again. Next, I used a sawzall with a good blade and cut the inner pipe lengh-wise inside the nipple. Go slow and try not to cut the outter pipe. Once through, use a screwdriver to pry up on the inner pipe by the cut and it will loosen and then you can pull it out. I hope this makes sense.
